Im looking for one that is light (so Trillian would be out) thats runs on win98se and that it can stay connected.

Windows Gaim is probably the best one for that old of a laptop. I have used it on many Linux systems and the windows port looks promising.

I use trillian before It has all the major instant messaging protocols even mirc. It is simple and easy to use just go to http://www.trillian.cc/
