I like Dorothy Sayers, a pre-WWII English writer of the Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane mysteries. She's a more thoughtful writer than either Agatha Christie or Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - where the others satisfy themselves with cleverness, Sayers goes the further step of writing plausible and human characters.
I also enjoy the mysteries of the 19th century Britisher Wilkie Collins, though he did not write nearly so many as these other authors that have been mentioned. However, both "The Moonstone" and "The Woman in White" are excellent.

P.D. James for sure - sure, Agatha could think up pretty cool puzzles but her style isn't of a calibre that even nearly matches James. This woman can WRITE!!! You get lost in her settings, and by the end of the book you really know all the characters, where Christie's characters were quite flat in general. Poe wrote mostly short stories so didn't allow so much character development. I guess it depends what kind of mystery you like. If it's short stories you like, then sure go for Christie or Poe but if you're going for literature, read James... or Michael Ondaantje "Anil's Ghost" is another good one. If you like the classical crime fiction, try Dashiell Hammett or Raymond Chandler. Hope that helped.

Agatha Christie by far! Her books are 2nd in most selling books ever...and 1st is the Bible! Which obviously proves that she is not only a phenomenal writer, but the best mystery writer as well. :-)

There are several, depending on your taste and level of excitement. Below are some I like:
1). Thrilling honest - Hugh Pentecost aka Judson Philips (Uncle George series, Pierre Chambrun series, Peter Styles series)
2). Blood chilling - Patricia Cornwell
3). Moral honest - Ellis Peters (Brother Cadfael series; especially if you're religious)
