Check your fans - one in your power supply, one on your processor and possibly one in front or rear of the case.

You may want to have your fan checked, sounds like to me it's over heating. If you had the motherboard installed by someone, they may not have the correct board to go with that processor. Another problem may be is, you need to have at least 256 MB of ram to be running Win XP on your pc.

Follow sparkys advice! Sounds like dust buildup. If you have added components to your system you might also want to upgrade the power supply as your system is asking for more current now. If you have, increase the wattage as much as your wallet will allow. All modern day sytem power supplies have overheat protection thermistors and will shut down when overheating. A vacuum cleaner with the round brush will work wonders.

Its a stong possibility that the internal fan has malfunctioned and no longer works, if this is the case, your computer will automatically shud down when it reaches a certain tempreture (about 40 deg C) your only option is to get a new fan from a repairman. You could disable this auto shut down sequence however it will cause your system to overheat and explode :D

The over heating issue possaibly.. try this go to BIOS setting be hitting del; go to a section where it says load failsafe defaults or load optimised BIOS settings. check the battery too. go to hardware monitor section and check the fanspeed and temprature options and see if some thing is cooking...

Multitude of possibilities....
Could be overheating, could be a bad power supply, it could be virus /spyware related, etc.
My suggestion is to take it into a PC shop for a diagnosis... or call the Geek Squad (or whatever their name is through Best Buy I think).

Make sure the battery is charged. Or maybe the cord has been accidentally unplugged and the battery is drained after using it for a while and it turns off.

This is caused by a faulty fan that causes your pc to overheat. Most people would say it is caused by a virus. I don't think it is because it would turn off every 10 min. SP2 fixes that problem.

Are you saying your computer turns itself off while you are using it or is it idle for a short period of time then shuts off? If it is idol, then you may have a power setting to have it shut off to save on resources (life of the system).

does it give you a warning that the system is shutting down, if so you may have a virus if not you may be due for a power supply replacement, can be done by yourself reasonably cheap or your local technician would be able to help you
