My husband's birthday was a few weeks ago and he had to work but he came home with a cake. When I asked him if all of his employees had chipped and got him a cake, he told me that this straight male employee felt bad he had to work on b-day and decided to buy him a cake and he put regular birthday candles on it. I guess to me guys just don't do things like that, but i don't know for sure b/c I am not a guy so any help on this would be much aprreciated.

I am not close to my boss like that, but there are a few guys and girls at work whom I *might* do that for. If it was from a female at work or from a lover, I dont think he would have brought the cake home. He would have hid it from you somehow, and not brought it home, or ditched it on the way home. If he was really trying to hide it, he would have.
But watch him closely, but not too closely, and dont accuse him of having an affair or anything like that, keep an eye on him because it might be something or nothing, no way to be sure.

I think he is kissing up.. I would ask your husband how he felt when he first saw the cake. Was he uncomfortable? How was the cake given to him?
The question is, what payoff does this guy have in doing this?
Does your husband give employees their birthdays off? If so, they probably feel guilty he didn't.

Yes, straight guys do do that. There's unfortunately the risk that it's seen negatively, as trying to win favor from the boss, but some people do organize a celebration for unselfish reasons.

It's sad when someone does something nice for a person and immediately a kind gesture is looked at in a negative way. Just goes to show what the world is coming to. So sad.

Sure, why not? Not all men are raised as faux macho men, thinking that any sign of caring for another human being is a weakness. I think that was very thoughtful. I know plenty of men, straight and gay, who have expressive personalities. Maybe you just check your gut and see if maybe you think your man is gay....

What is homosexual about caring enough about somebody to remember their birthday? People have to learn exactly what makes a person "gay" and buying a birthday cake is not it.

Depends on how close their work relationship is. If there close at work then theres nothing wrong with that. But if they bearly know each other then someone may have have a crush on him.

Why would that be weird? I think it is a nice gesture. I think you are reading way too much into it. Waaayyyy too much... I would have said, cool! cake! let's celebrate!
