I agree, regreting about the previous isn't gonna get u everywhere. existence is all about new expererinces. no longer in simple terms in Love, yet in some thing else. all of us would have poor expereinces and all of us would have happy expereinces. existence is all about accepting them with an open coronary heart. There's a difference between love, the expression of such with another physical being, and passion, the expression of the desire you have for that being. Lots of these aren't acts of love, but acts of passion... and the neglect and hurt it causes others to long for something temporary, furtive, fleeting.
To explain it philosophically, tales of lost love are basically a call to people's 'pathos' to not shy away from love but to enjoy it while you have it (which is not easy to do by any measure: the best way to tell you're in love is to not be in it anymore) and to the 'logos' of knowing it's temporary, and that you need to take care of yourself and those around you until you find it again.
People who enjoy love the most are very rarely a master of both logic and empathy: usually one or the other rules the day for them. This is the basic human problem, in my eyes. To truly be mature is to recognize and embrace both.

Love is a good thing. Selfishness in love is not unconditional. It has expectations. Learn to love unconditionally. Lack of communication coupled with unrealistic expectations lead to the situations that you named. Love without regret or attachment and be free. Peace.
