I do disk cleanup and disk degragmenter about once a week. I have xp home edition and have about 60% of hard disk space left . I use a 56 kbps modem. I cannot have ADSL wireless modem because of where I live (remote island). I have Norton Anti virus which I update and scan regularly and also have Spybot - Search & destroy. What i can possibly do to increase the speed on my computer.?

Look at your systray (bottom right corner). How many of those applications do you actually use? Uninstall ones that you're sure you never use. Check the start up folder. Do you actually need those applications running at start up? If not remove them from the start up folder. Do a bit more research to find out how to remove more start up applications. Does your antivirus cover spyware? I think Norton 2006 probably does. In which case you don't need Spybot as well. So remove it. Remove software you don't need or at least make sure it's not running in the background and your computer will speed up. If you're not downloading or installing new programs you can disable your antivirus. In short make sure that you only run the applications that you need. Then consider upgrading the hardware.

It seems your computer was just working fine until now something went terribly wrong. As we see you already tried defragmenting your hard drive and also scanned your PC with spybot. Well now its time to start fresh new. But before we can start any troubleshooting some basic things to check.
Open your computers tower. If there is any duct please use a blower to clean it. Dust could be one more reason. Anyways you are helping your PC to keep it cool. Also when your computer is open turn it on and Check if the fan on the processor works right. There should be no dust in the PC. Now check how it works. If the problem still continues, please backup the data, format and reinstall the operating system. that will take care of the problem. Hope that answers your question.

Not really... people want a miracle cure for this (kinda like people want a pill to lose weight without having to change their eating habits or exercise). There are a few things you can do, but it will speed things up my 1/1000th of a second, so it is nothing you will notice. If you are talking to improve your surf speed, you can find a service that provides a web accelerator. The problem with these is they only improve how fast a new page loads & not how fast thing are uploaded/downloaded. If you are talking computer speed in general, then you want to add more RAM or a faster CPU. That is the cold, hard truth of it..... Defragging, cleaning, & things are all things people are told by those who really don't know or don't want to break down the reality of the situation.

Your computer is only as fast as your CPU can manage in speed! You didn't mention what CPU you have.
If you want to speed up internet access. Try CableNut408.
If you want to speed up Windows. Try Hare.
Go to your System and choose Best Performance. Trim down your system fancy stuff like Desktop pics, Special Effects.
Everything else you are already doing will all help to squeeze that extra mileage out of your PC.
Doubling your ram will help tremendously!
Check & compare that your HDD is up to date in speed. If it's an old model upgrade to the current crop of super fast HDD.

Check that there are no other programmes running, like Limewire or a site you may have used for downloading video or music.Check your task bar on bottom right of screen, right click over icon,it should then light up "exit" left click exit, now that program has gone.Go to recycle bin and delete what is not needed. You may also need to delete cookies and history as that can use up a lot of space.

Check the amount of RAM you have. You may also need to upgrade your motherboard for a faster processor, depending on how old your system is. Most systems are coming with a standard 512 MB of RAM.

Backup everything you want to keep and do a complete restore and take it back to the day you bought. Then put the files and applications back on it. It should speed back up.

You may change the processor with a faster one and the disk with a SATA one (it's faster then ATA).
