Most will say the first recorded was Jack the Ripper {in fact there is a college course taught on him at Pittsburgh State University -Fayette campus}. Much of his crimes span is not known for fact however they believe it began in the 1880's. The first American serial killer is known as H.H. Holmes{he has other alias but this is what he is listed under} has also been reported as the first with his spree beginning 1861 until his date of capture in 1896 {his is an awesome tale} There is a ton of information that has been shown to be fact unlike Jack the Ripper. So it is a toss up between the two most only say "Jack" was because he was the most well talked about since he was never truly recovered where Holmes was not a mystery as much. Hope this helps.

The first known serial killers were burke and hare.Better known as the body snatchers They preceded jack by 61yrs Thier 16 victims were sold to an edinburgh(scotland) doctor for dissection Thier first victim probably died of natual causes So they probably only commited 15 murders They suffocated thier victims so that there was no sign of violence so they could sell the cadavers These two also robbed graves of newly interred bodies It is believed that this was cause of there downfall as one of the doctors involved in the dissection recognised a body and alerted police.Hare turned "kings evidence"and was released Burke was executed. Quite possibly before jack t ripper was born A good dictionary sayes to burke,means to smother or sufficate
