I guess that depends on what state you are in and why the child misses.
We live in Alabama and my now 8 year old missed last year because we had to make a trip to Florida for 4 days to look at houses(we were going to move) . I got a notice from the District Attorney that if there was 1 more absence(a 5th) for any reason (other than illness) that I would be turned in for truancy and have to go to court. I would have faced a heavy fine ( up to $1,000) and up to 30 days in jail. By the way, that was a first offense.
So, just make sure the child goes to class whenever possible and when he doesn't be sure to send a note.

No television, chores, forced to write an apology letter to his teacher for holding up class.
Or there is always having him make a sign that says, "I don't care enough about my education to go to school" and make him stand outside of the school on a Saturday for an hour.

A lot of absences can get you in trouble, because you have a legal obligation to see that your child gets to school or is properly home schooled. If the problem is very bad it can attract the attention of Social Services.
