I went to private school for high school and one of the positive things that we did was this volunteer program called Read to the Children. A couple of us would go to a 1st or 2nd grade class and we'd read to story to them that was appropriate for the grade. It promoted reading in the young children b/c they saw that there were kids who weren't that much older than them we could read well.

I don't think that that private school still does that program or anything, but I wanted to know if anyone thought it would be a good idea to try & start it up at the local high school that my younger siblings currently attend. It could be part of a volunteer-type of thing and it would be a couple of high school students who are able to read really well to children. And each couple would go into a separate 1st or 2nd grader's class and read a book once a week. It would be a good thing to write on the college application, and it would also promote reading in the children. Should I? Any suggestions?

I think this is a very good idea. You need to start with the administration of the High School and the targeted elementary schools, if you want to get anywhere. You also might be able to bring something like this into a local Boys & Girls Club.

My children's school has parent volunteers who read to the class. Something that the little kids like even better is "reading buddies", where the older students come and read with them, one on one. I think this makes their reading skills better and they enjoy the one on one attention. This works easily at our school because the high school and middle school are right next to the elementary school, so they can just walk over. I would worry about a couple of high schoolers leaving campus during the school day. How will they get to the other school, and who is going to be responsible for their safety?

Yes!!! By all means, make it happen!! Two thumbs up to you for thinking of our young students in such a grand way!! .. The school, I'm sure would go for it, if you're able to present a plan that would work out with few problems. We've got volunteers at our school and our public library that read to the children at set times of the week/day. The children love it and the parents are most appreciative of the time and efforts given by these caring adults.

Absolutely! This is great for the younger children, and also terrific for the kids that volunteer to be readers.

Perhaps you could also involve retired people in the community. There are many retired teachers and others who would love to find a meaningful thing to do with their days.

Good luck and I am extremely proud of your thoughts and efforts.
