I don't know how old you are, but from experience with my own teenage daughter, text messaging gets excessive. If you are texting during school, then you're not doing your work and that's not good.

If your parents are paying the cell phone bill, then you really have to follow their rules, even if you have a job and are willing to pay for the text messages. Can you not just call the friend and talk to them instead of texting?

What details? I guess if I were you I would sit down with my parents and talk to them like an adult. Present your case. Tell them you're not texting anything vulgar or obscene and that if you pay for it then there shouldn't be a problem. Try to reason with them without coming across naggy, whiny or childish. If all else fails look into getting your own phone if you're old enough. My friend's sister is only 16 and she has a cell phone in her name. I forget what company she goes through for that. Also, look into a pre-paid cell phone. I know T-Mobile has a prepaid plan where you can get a sidekick...which is REALLY cool for texting. Or Cingular has the go-phone. Those don't require contracts or age limits. Good luck. Hope I was helpful.

wow. i hate it when parents do their jobs to mold you into a productive member of society.
my only suggestion is to put a 'down payment' each month. for example, give them $20 at the beginning of the month. if you only send 100 texts then you get $10 back. (as i think the going rate for a text message is $.10) they also have a service you can pay for with your mobile carrier. cingular i think offers 100 texts for $5/month (i THINK...at least it's something close to that) or sometimes they have 'unlimited text messaging' packages you could pay for yourself on a monthly basis.
honestly i'm not sure what the big deal is since they let you have a phone. have you asked them specifically what the reason is? i am assuming they don't want to pay a hefty bill at the end of the month. count yourself lucky you even have your own phone

Come on man! Who need text messages? Do you just want to look cool? Is it the peer pressure?
You can say hundreds more words talking than what you can write in a text message in the same period of time. So, why bother writing on those tiny buttons? Because you cannot talk in class? You probably cannot text message in class either anyway.
Save you money for something important.

I'd tell them the reasons why I want to get text messages as well as why the text message is useful. I'd also ask why they won't let me get one and talk through it. If you have a good reasoning - and prove you've done enough research on the plan, the cost, etc. I think your parents would be more open about it.

First off, how old are you? Secondly, in my experience as a Mother, its's like feeding the dog, I always ending up doing it. Your world will not come to a screeching halt if you can't have text messaging. Also, do you have any idea how expensive that can get? Dare to be different from your friends! Talk to people instead of texting them notes!

It's kind of strange that they won't let you text, but they will let you be on net. Honestly there nothing you can do. Your parents have the final say so at the end of the day. So just to keep everything cool and not be grounded or lose all cell phone rights all together just don't do it.

Who textes anyway? They crap takes so long to type out it's really annoying to me personally.

Well what did they see in your text messages that breached your trust with them or did you not pay on time? Txt messages cost extra.

you should sit them down and ask their reasoning for this decision. See if it's valid or not and see if they are willing to listen to why you think you should have them. If you're old enough then maybe you could get your own phone contract and pay your own bill for it and do what you like
