It's low on refrigerant. Probably a leaky line. Look for a line that the rubber looks wet on it. You can probably get away with a recharge for a while. Eventually, you will need to fix the leak. The wet rubber line will help you find it. Central air on your house??? If so....ooops, check to see if the compressor is running. Just because the fan turns on outside doesn't mean the compressor does. There is a selinoid (relay) outside in the condensor housing that could be bad. If it's a Heat Pump, there may be a problem with the directional valve outside. They stick. Sorry, once they freeze for good, there's not getting them unstuck. You'll need to have the system drained, the defective part replaced, and the system recharged again. Check to make sure everything is operating outside before presuming the directional valve is bad.

Sounds like the evaporator unit is icing up. This is the set of coils in the attic or where ever they have located it. Not the compressor & condenser outside. The ice blocks the flow of air over the evaporator and you no longer get cool air. When you shut the unit off, the ice melts and the evaporator works again. This is often caused by low freon levels in the system. That can be checked by a set of guages. In other words, call a technician.

Have someone check your compressor because I have the same problem and it blows hot air all of the time. depending on what your car is it may cost a few hundred dollars.

look around the unit, and see if it has dirt built up around the outside of it,it sounds like it may have leaves or debris clogging it up,that will cause erratic behavior,as far as cooling goes, other wise you may have a thermostat going bad, this a very common cause with older units, hope this helps you some.

have someone look at the thermistor or the expansion valve in the ac system . could have a leak in your ac lines . also check to see if your ac compressor clutch is working or not . cause your clutch always have to be cycling when ac is turn on.

VERY HARD TO DIAGNOSE FROM AFAR? COULD BE A NUMBER OF THINGS, DIRTY FILTER, LOW REFRIG,CLOGGED ORIFICE OR FILTER DRIER?? BEST TO HAVE SYSTEM PRESSURE CHECKED BY A TECHNICIAN? SORRY NO REAL CHEAP WAY OUT UNLESS YOU HAVE A FRIEND THAT DOES A/C WORK AND WILL CUT YOU A DEAL?? OTHERWISE STAYING COOL ISNT CHEAP AND A GOOD A/C TECH. IS INVALUABLE.
