Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye. (Mixing of east meets west philosphies today, I just got this one off of a tv show, and thought about a quote of what jesus said, and came up with what I think is a good question)

but if people examine themselves, it would be easier for them to improve themselves, past that point, and beyond themselves, and try to be perfect

Think of your eyes as windows. They only see outwards.

You know what color your eyes are, right?
They are yours.
But you are the only person in the world that cannot see them without having them reflected on something.
You can tell what color are the eyes of anyone, but if there were no reflecting surfaces, and nobody told you what color are your eyes, you wouldn't know the color of your eyes.
Right?
Well, the same happens with our behavior.
We are just the way we are, and there's no way to know how we are, because we are the way we are.
Until someone lets us know what they see in us.
That's the way it is.
Therefore, the concept that is easier to see the speck in some others eye than the plank in ones own, is not a condemning sentence, it's just the plain truth.
And that's the way it is.

Most people don't like introspection. It makes them squirmy and uncomfortable. It's much more comforting to the ego to find others' flaws than it is to search and find your own. Pointing out others' flaws gives a person a false sense of superiority. The worst offenders are usually amazingly insecure about themselves. I'm pretty secure right now as I'm keeping the timber industry afloat by harvesting my own logs :)

There is a saying that when we see the flaws in others it's because we have the same ones, that's why we recognize them.
So instead of doing an inventory of our selves we take someone else's.Doing it that way stops our growth,to making better people of ourselves. It's not always easy to look in the mirror but it sure does feel better to me to look at my person and take care my imperfections. How can one look at their own life when they spend time in others? We all have a choice.

That depends on the person. I personally can find many flaws in my own personalitly and apperance as well as my peers and all others, but I brush them aside for the most part and focus more on what is positive about them. I think though that most people find flaws in others to soothe themselves and show themselves that they're "perfect." (when in reality that couldn't be less true.) "The biggest flaw is to believe that you have none."

The flaws people see are really their own subjective insecurities projected outward. It only makes them, the projector, miserable so have pity on them and move on. Peoples criticism should be treated like 'water off a ducks back'.

We have this hard wiring in us to behave this way. Its awful huh? I am guilty of it and not one person here can say they are not! when one becomes "aware" of themselves they can see the flaws they have clearly. Not that it is going to be easy to change that by any stretch of the imagination. I don't know if it is better to be spiritually aware or just continue through life with horse blinders on. There is no easy path in life.

Most of the time, people dont look at and examine themselves on a constant basis. However, we do look at and explore, come in comtact with other people constantly.
Its definately not right. I think that every time someone finds a flaw in someone, they should immediately examine themselves, you know, check themselves. Could, and most likely is the pot calling the kettle black!

The judgment of another is a mere reflection of our self. We verbalize the judgment to enhance and justify the briefly held belief that betterment is the path to enlightenment.

We're all surrounded by mirrors but we rarely use them for a wise purpose. We're willing to change and change again the most superficial parts of us but all too afraid to change what matters most: our own character.
