My father was a racist...but I'm not and never have been. However, I still hear his voice in my head saying the things he did about the people he hated. It has colored (no pun intended) the way I look at the world, even though I know his words, opinions and feelings were rooted in ignorance. It's extremely hard to shut those thoughts out.
In the south, racism is deeply embedded. The current generation may not be racist, but there's a good chance their parents or grandparents were/are. If someone is raised with certain notions about particular races (even if they know it's not true or accurate), their world view can't help but be tainted to a degree. That doesn't mean THEY are racist...just that, perhaps, they have their predecessors' voices running through their heads.
As far as mixed race couple mackin' it in public...I'd be staring not because they're a biracial couple but because I'd stare at anyone getting all lovey dovey on the street!

I believe that Ca and NYC is alot more developed than down south. I am a black women and I know I am not prejudice. However, I do tend to stare at a black man with a white women or vice versa. I guess its still a little new for me. I do think that being in the South has something to do with it also. People down here are still racists. White and Black people. As for me, I don't care what color you are. Its about the way the other person make you feel.

I am from the South and it is fairly common to see inter-racial couples along with their children. I am ashamed to say this but, I do notice. I don't stare, at least I don't think I do. But, most of the time the Black male is a very good looking man and the white woman is usually overweight and has bleached blonde hair. I don't know if it is the Black/White issue or the fact she is not as well groomed as he, that gets my attention. I really hope I don't sound racist. I don't mean to be... :)

Its your decision on who u want to be with. People these days were brought up the old fashioned way ... White people with white people and black with black people. People should not stare at other people anyway its just rude. I am not racist i think people should stay in there own race .... I feel sorry for the kids in those relationships... kids sometimes get picked on cuz they dont know what race they are... are they white or black. I have black friends who are married to white people. Its like I said before its your decision. Maybe one day there will be no racism in the world and everyone will be more harmoniuous and get along better. Good luck

Yes, it's a completely southern thing. Frankly, America could do without all of the inbred, white trash, fundamentalist Christian hillbillies and rednecks.
Edit: On a side note, let me ask you this: do you stare when you see a black man with a white woman? I would say that, in all seriousness, most people just seem to have some built-in, unconscious stereotyping going on in their minds.

Come on, white women make up a good chunk of the population. Some of them are bound to end up with black men. Even if you pared every white guy up with a white woman, there would still be enough left over to date other races. You have a lot of white men who like Asian and Latin babes, so you're left with a good chunk of white women left over. This is just a thought, but I think some of it may be due to the fact that black men and white women are on the same level. White women, in general, make more than blck men, but I think when it comes to social status, they are abou the same.

I am in the Midwest, it isn't something you see everyday, but when I do, to be totally honest it doesn't phase me at all.
