How old is the IPOD ?
Probably you have used it a lot and now the battery needs to be replaced with a new one, because its loosing its charge rapidly even when in the sleep mode.
The retention capacity of the battery may be lost
Anyway carry the charging equipment with you , you may never know there is an opportunity in everything, one has to just find it !
One more tip I can give you is , DRAIN THE BATTERY totally, totally, totally, by that I mean the power should be under 0.5% of the total and the device shouldn't be able to start. After this charge the IPOD fully and dont disturb it till its not totally charged.
The reason I am requesting you to do this is generally we charge the battery from the 25% full or even 10% full mark when alll the functions of the device cannot be used.Due to this the battery slowly dies in the 25% area which is never drained or charged. Hence what we get is 75% of the total battery only.

You need to to download the ipod updater because they have new updates for ipods that can improve the battery life and if you have the 30 GB video ipod playing movies drains the battery life and if you always go from one playlist to another that also drains the battery life of the ipod so try to stick to a playlist that you don't have to fast forward songs you don't like. How do you not have a way to charge your ipod for a week? Are you going to a foreign country? You should go to Radio Shack and get an outlet adapter that will work with where you are going.

Here is the best way to save your battery. Go settings from the main menu, then to Backlight timer, then set the backlight timer to 2 seconds, or whatever works for you...if you have the backlight on all the time, that will drain your battery very fast. I hope this helps

Only listen to it when you feel you absolutely HAVE to... every other time, find something else to occupy yourself. When you don't use it, turn it off completely.
