As a genetic counselor, I can tell you not to worry about your visit too much. The counselor will address your family and pregnancy history to help determine if there is additional testing that may be required. If you have a history of 3 or more spontaneous miscarriages, the counselor may suggest that both the man and woman have a blood chromosome analysis done to rule out an inherited chromosomal translocation. The counselor is there to help you understand what may be going on and is specially trained in both clinical genetics and counseling so that the information can be presented to you in an educated and sincere manner.

I only know of genetic counselling from my experience as a neonatal nurse, we often had babies with genetic defects and the parents would receive counselling about future pregnancies etc. I do know that the incidence is higher in the asian population due to inter-marriage.
If you do not have a child already then I'm not sure that genetic counselling would help- after all if infertility was prevalent in you or your partners family then neither of you would be here!
Maybe it is fertility treatment that you need.
Good luck, hope this has helped a little.

My husband's oldest son is autistic. Although it's not believed to be an inherited disease it was recommended that we go through genetic counseling when we became pregnant. Being in medicine, I found the class interesting and very informative. If it's offered, I would recommend that you take it.
