Our government has continually failed the people for as long as I've paid attention (15 years or so now). We are plagued by the inability to learn from our mistakes. There are many who wish this was different and have no idea how to accomplish change. If a major secessionist movement were to begin, would there be a Civil War, and why or why not?

In order to determine how far this country is away from civil war, you have to look at those countries that are currently engaged in civil wars. That would include several African countries, Haiti, East Timor, Chechnya, etc. Or look at countries that have had civil wars in this century: Russia, China, etc. In most of those cases, the actions of the governments have been far more egregious than those of our own. Generally it takes mass oppression, genocide, or some other atrocity (not just a difference of political opinion) committed by the government in order to foment a civil war.

Those who are dissatisfied here with how their government is performing have many more outlets for their frustration (e.g., free elections, free speech, freedom of assembly to try to organize peaceful opposition, freedom to demonstrate, etc.); they do not need to resort to civil war. Not even close. Anyone who thinks otherwise should look at other parts of the world before talking about civil war...we have it good. Civil war here would only bring misery and the end of the nation with the highest degree of freedom in the history of the world.

When we no longer have freedom of speech or free and fair elections, we will be deprived of any peaceful means of expressing our dissatisfaction with the government. Only then will it be time to consider civil war. We're a long way from that point right now.

The nearest the USA will get to a Civil War will be when the country's resources run out (oil gas etc). the people of America will find it harder than MOST other countries to be told to "pull in their belts" as for as long as I can remember you have never had it so good! Food production will also become a problem due to the farming methods that have been used. All these things are cataclysmic events, people will become disgruntled and who knows what will happen then!America HAS to understand what is happening to our planet before it is too late.

It's not gonna happen. I know our government has not been perfect but we're all living fairly comfortably in America and still have the greatest gift...our ability to think and have our own opinions. Now you mentioned how the government has failed the people but I don't believe the people have done everything they could do to make our government the best it could be...it is a two way system. Have you done everything you can to make our country the best? Not that it is totally the people's responsibility but we all need to do something.

It wouldn't be much of a war - Liberals don't believe in guns and probably wouldn't fight anyway without permission from the United Nations (the U.N. would never grant permission because they will always be utterly dependent on our military and our money).

Or did you mean a "civil war" with "undocumented" immigrants?

All joking aside, you're missing something important. This government is of, by, and for the people. We are responsible for controlling it - its faliure is our faliure. Our best course of action is: continue to elect those whom we feel will best represent us in Washington.

it will probably not happen again. we realize we are stronger if we act as one nation. when civil war happens a nations opens itself up to be prey for other nations and their ideas or attacks.
