Have regular informal meetings with your staff to give them the opportunity to tell you of any recurring problems in the running of the restaurant. If you show your staff that they are valued and that they are important to the success of the restaurant they will enjoy the job more and work harder. Customers pick up on when staff are unhappy and can tell when a worker enjoys their work and when the worker does really not want to be there but needs the money.
If you treat your workers with respect they will treat you with respect. They will be less likely to steal stock or be inflexible about work schedule and they will stay with the restaurant for longer. For a restaurant to run efficiently you need people to know the job and that happens best when your staff have been working for you for a while. You need to find ways of raising staff morale to make them want to stay.
It's also good for employees to have positive relationships with each other so that they see themselves a part of a team. Maybe you could have one night each month where the restaurant is open to just staff so that you can all have a catch up and enjoy each others company. This is especially good if you have staff that never work with each other because some do day shifts and some do evenings.

make connections and treat everyone with respect... even when you get mad try to keep things in perspective and have meetings with the staff to keep the lines of communication open. Have an open door policy.
If something gets screwed up by a staff member and they apologize and feel bad then give them a break but don't let people take advantage of you either. You will have to show you are the leader with a heart and lion as well to get everyone on board.

If you've been a waitperson or kitchen staff, then you're on your way - listen to the other responses.
If you haven't, then work an 8-hour shift on the floor, followed the next night by 6-8 hours in the kitchen. Learn what your employees do before you boss them around.

This is only a small part, and applies to mostly employees, but do remember to criticize or critique others in private between you two and to brag on, boast or commend others in public.
Also, the old saying that always applies, "There is no I in TEAM"
And lastly, be fair, firm, and consistent in all things. ( Special note: consistent does not mean you should not change if you find you are doing something in error but once you change, stay with your change. In other words, don't bounce back and forth repeatedly once you make a decision. )

Don't get involved in the stupidity of restaurant operations. It's a simple business to run, but it gets hellish sometimes when it gets busy. Maintain integrity - keep things consistent. Maintain a strong professional friendship with servers, hosts, etc. Make them like you, be enjoyable, be functional, be their boss. A happy and well-functioning staff will make your job 1000x times easier.

Listen to your employees!
Know that the customer is not always right but, you do have to satisfy them.
Know that the bottom line is not always the most important thing.
Always know that, no matter how bad the problem, they will be gone in an hour :-)
It's burgers and fries sweetie :-)
No matter what the level!

When you have time, spend time with restaurant managers that you might know or meet. Get involved in local business organizations to make contacts.

Get to know the type of food you will be serving, understand how the owners would like the place run, know how to run every aspect of the restaurant from dishwasher to waiting tables, to food prep and cooking.
