Your accessory belt broke. It drives the power steering pump and the alternator. Probably about a $30 part, any decent shadetree mechanic can do the repair, but you shouldn't drive the car that way.
You can check by looking under the hood. There will be some shiny round pulleys with no belt on them.

Sounds like the Accessory Drive belt came off, which would cause the alternator (battery light) and power steering (Stiff) to stop working. Check under the hood to see if the belt is still on. If it is not you will need a new belt but before you buy one check the condition of the belt tensioner to make sure this did not fail first and take out the belt. Also you might have a frozen pulley.
If you are not a fix it yourself person make sure the shop that does the work looks at all the components that work with the belt and that they are all in good condition and spinning freely.
Something caused this failure and it might be that the belt was old, if not then something else is at fault and you need to a address that as well...Good Luck

Like Mikey and frank f have suggested. You did not get the total tale. there is no way the police or all people besides the indisputable fact that the owner of the vehicle is going to could pay for damages and prefer reported the following is why. If spikes are used on a motorized vehicle, it replaced into maximum in all probability in a pursuit. this signifies that the motive force is breaking the regulation for no longer pulling over. (even with if it replaced into the incorrect vehicle) At this aspect the motive force is going to be arrested and is committing against the law. The police use spike strips to provide up the motorized vehicle, and motive force is arrested. Any harm to the motorized vehicle that's brought about is the responsibility of the motive force or proprietor at this aspect.

it sounds like your belt broke, there is a main belt that drives the water pump ,and the alternator and the power steering pump,if this main belt brakes, you loose everything, and it does get hard to steer, also it wont charge the battery either, you need to get this looked after right away, and do your self a favor, don't drive it,till you do get it fixed,,you can really do some major damage to your car,if you drive it like this.

Power steering pump maybe? It makes a loud, grinding noise as you drive and it can cause your wheel to lock up. Definitely need to get that checked out, though.

Serpentine belt, sounds like. Probably took out the power steering and ac belts on its way out. Don't drive it like that unless your sure your alternator and water pump are still operating.

Your power steering pump most likely. Also check your fanbelt under the hood because it might of snapped and that could be a huge problem if it hits something going at 2-3k rpm's.
