The major theme in 'Blade Runner' is, "What does it mean to be human?". The test given to determine wether one is a replicant, uses the subject's reactions to determine their humanity, particularly to animals, as, supposedly, humans would have sympathy for animals, while replicants would not. However, throughout the film, the four replicants repeatedly show sympathy and compassion, while the vast majority of humans (both major characters and people walking about the street), are very cold and impersonal -sort of a commentary on how 'inhuman' humans can be.

Philip K. Dick wrote "do androids Dream of Electric sheep" many years before Blade runner came to the screen, and other than the basic premise of "being human", and some of the characters names, it doesn't really resemble the book. When Blade Runner first came out, critic shelled it as dark and moody, but as time went on, and the fans of the movie made it a legend, many critics reversed their views, and rightfully so. The core of the movie is Deckard, a burned out cop, who's skill is finding and retiring androids that have gone rouge. Some wonderful sequences in the movie play on societies prejudices and fears, and other work on how we should trust somethings that we actually fear. The visuals are not bad, and Ridley Scott's cut of the movie is much better than the "voice over" original. Vangelis provides some outstanding musical score , and stellar performances by Harrison Ford, and Rutger Hauer. The final soliloquy by Roy Batty is pure genius and should not be missed. It sums up the entire movie in about 5 minutes.

Like a lot of movies, Blade Runner is based on a book. I don't know the author, sorry, but the title of the book is "Do Robots Dream of Electric Sheep?" Perhaps that will help you understand what the movie's trying to say. It's all about what constitutes life, sentience, reality... and how we should not kill what we don't understand. Amazing movie, amazing book.
