No it is not a bad question. Homeowners do this in some places all the time.

Be ready to invest some time and effort however. Also, ease of drilling your own well for irrigation purposes depends a lot on where you are located - ie. sandy soil, clay, rock, etc. Sometimes it is much easier to have a shallow well drilled for you. Local drilling companies will know more about the depths of the water table in your area. If you pursue doing this yourself, you might want to know this. I wouldn't attempt putting in a shallow well myself if the water table is more 25-30ft.

However, you can find good info for putting in shallow wells by using your search engine and searching for 'shallow well drilling',
'water well drilling', etc. If you use Yahoo Search, it will give you some alternate search terms that are useful.

If you go ahead with this, I highly recommend putting in a casing. This is a 3" or 4" PVC pipe sunk in the ground to the approximate depth for your well. The suction pipe and pipe point are then put inside this casing and into the water carrying strata. Makes maintenance and changing well points much easier.

Good Luck
