Well, knowing that ballplayers commonly still play while injured, I take it to mean that the player is so injured that it disables him from playing, so they really don't mean the guy is permanently "physically challenged." You know, in the Americans With Disabilities Act sense of the word. But unable to play - they are only thinking in context of the game.

Here is the same answer to the question when you posed it three hours ago.

"That is the term they use. You can be injured and still play but the disabled list says you are not able to play, hence disabled."

He's not able to play. That means dis abled.

Injured implies he is still going to play. Most athletes will continue to play even if severely injured until they are forced to stop. That's because their playing is worth millions and millions of dollars and has a shelf life. Once they hit a certain age, it's all over.

What difference does it make?

This society needs to learn to accept situations for what they are, regardless of what words we choose to describe them.

Just as one word becomes acceptable, it starts to offend someone and then we are searching for new terminology to express the condition.

Secretaries became Administrative Assistants. Eventually someone will become offended and we will call them "First person you see when you enter the office personnel"

It's not the words which are offensive, it's the people who use them, and their intent for using the words.

Disabled just means not able...the player is not able to play, so I think it fits just fine.
