As humans, we constantly focus on the differences, of what we perceive as detriments amongst those around us. But if it's true, that we were all created equal, then why does our society create a hierarchy, essentially categorizing others that maybe better/worse than ourselves? Does it have something to do with inflating our self esteem? Or is it a method of highlighting our own weaknesses and that of those around us, offering up a self-validating excuse as to why we may not be as successful as those listed on the Forbes 500?

I think that although we are all created equal, we are born into a society which is based on power. If you look at "survival of the fittest" you basically can see that for someone to survive, someone must also die in many situations. This has been handed down into our more current society, as that competition for money/power etc. are the means to a more meaningful survival. Yes we're created equally - but socialized into a unequal society.

most people don't want to be equal to everyone else.. They want to be BETTER THAN. I think deep down everyone wants the best for themselves. And when they see someone makes as much as bill gates or Oprah does they aspire to be equal to them too. Its a never-ending cycle, theres always someone whos happier or healthier or makes more money. I think in america we are expected to be an idea of "perfect" like celebrities but lets face... we are not all equal and we dont all have the same resources and abilities.

As far as competition goes, it all boils down to survival of the fittest... be it hunting or getting promotions, we as a people will always compete to achieve our standard of survival.

some standards are lower than others....

as for the hierarchy, that comes from the need to organaize the wretched masses into managable groups. Without it, we would be the smurfs. Commies.

BECAUSE we were all created equal, human nature forces us to find things within ourselves to make ourselves special, to stand out, to rise above others.

To FEEL special in any way we can find.
