the butterfly effect is something we all ponder about. if you had the ability to go back in time and change things in your life that would be cool right?? well thats the fun part but what nobody thinks about is although we change that part of our history it causes a chain reaction to how our future would be. for instance if I had convinced my mom not to marry my stepdad then yes I would not have gotten raped by him, but in the end I wouldn't have met the man who is now my husband. My time now would have turned out way different. everytime you go back and change something you are creating another ripple in a neverending chain. hope this answers your question.

Most of the answers here are very good.
In one sense, every action has a connection with or an effect on everything else, like ripples in a pond.
In another sense, we all face many possiblities of what we will do or what will happen to us. If there are alternate possible futures there may be alternate realities. What is done makes the choice from one moment to the next.
Now, what if we could go time traveling into the past? A big change in the recent past may actually result in a smaller overall change than a tiny change in the distant past.
In the movie, THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT, most changes were disastrous, but the best change was the simplest and the earliest - just telling the girl to keep away from him.
A movie where the idea is a bit easier to understand is, A SOUND OF THUNDER, based on the short story by Ray Bradbury of the same name. Also try the movie, RETROACTIVE.
Almost all Science Fiction that deals with TIME TRAVEL touches on these problems.
Related concepts for your research might be: The Heisenberg Principle, Schrodinger's Cat, Gestalt Psychology, Synchronicity, and the Contamination and Relationship Principles. If you dig deep enough you may find that Magic and Quantum Physics overlap a bit. Hmmmm. . .
Then there is Arthur C. Clarke's famous quote, "Any sufficiently advanced form of science is indistinguishable from magic."

Simply, the idea is that even a small effect, like a butterfly flapping its wings, can be a key part of a chain of events that produces a big effect, like a hurricane or a tornado on the other side of the world. One extra atom might change the shape of a snowflake, just as a misinterpreted sigh could result in an argument that ruins a relationship ... or causes a war. The idea comes from chaos theory, a branch of mathematics that studies how complicated natural phenomena can be.

The butterfly effect is like throwing a small stone into a pond...the ripples move outward making larger changes in the rest of the body of water. In the movie, each minor change that he made in his or someone elses life effected the entire history of the universe within his lifetime!

Well I can't really help you on this one. But I know that when the crazy kid killed the dog, I had a tear running down my eye.

Each choice we make influences others. And that, in turn, comes back to help or hinders us.
