On average, it takes 7-10 days to fall off. Until then, make sure you clean around the base of the cord with alcohol and a q-tip several times a day. Let the baby's doctor know if it gets reddened around the base. But if it's just on by a thread, it should fall off, probably within the next 24 hours.

My daughter's cord fell off and it had the same look as you are describing. I freaked out because I didn't expect that. What you should do is clean it with a q-tip with a little alcohol on it at least once a day. It will heal in about a week and look like a regular navel. If it still has some hard parts that need to fall off on it rub some vaseline on those areas. I would continue to sponge bathe baby until it completely heals. I looked online everywhere trying to figure out what to do...luckily my grandmother was here to help me out. I was a little wierd about putting alcohol directly on it b/c I thought it would hurt the baby but she had no reaction to it. I promise it will look better soon. However if it oozes a lot or bleeds then contact the doctor.

Some babies umbilical cords are thick and plump, others are thin and long. So the time it takes for the stump to dry up and fall off varies.
My son......5 days
My daughter.....3 weeks.
Keep it dry, keep it clean (alcohol), and it will fall off. If you 'mess with it' by pulling and tugging, you could change the healing/appearance of your babies belly-button. My daughter has a bit of an outtie because I woulnd't stop messing with the thing.
Congrats on your sweetie!

It usually only takes about a week maybe a little more but it will fall off on it's own. Do not try to take it off because it could cause harm to the baby. And by the way congrats on having the new baby.

About 1-2 weeks and yes let it fall off on its own. If it looks like it is just hanging there, give her a bath and let the washcloth go over it and gently rub. When it does fall off, make sure that you put alcohol on it to dry it off the rest of the way. Congratulations!

Deffinitly let if fall off itself, don't pull it or cut it. My daughter's didn't fall off till she was almost a month old (4 weeks) and i put rubbing alcohol on it every diaper change, so the average is probably 2-3 weeks.

My daughter's was hanging by a thread at about five days. I just pulled it off the rest of the way. Didn't hurt her a bit.

Yes let it fall of by its self!!! Use alchol and a q-tip to clean it until it falls off. I will hurt if you pull it off. I have 4 children and it took 7 to 14 days to fall off. Good luck :-)
