Good taste in singers and good question. Minnie Riperton is my favorite singer of all time and her first two CDs are two of my three favorite CDs of all time. (By the way did you know Maya Rudolph of Saturday Night Live is her daughter?)
Mariah Carey is my favorite current singer.
In answer to your question I think Riperton is the better singer and and has the wider and higher octave range. I thought I read her range is 7 1/2 octaves. I think I read Careys is 5 1/2 octaves but I could be wrong. I have everything Riperton ever recorded as well as many of Mariah Carey CDs and I would say Riperton hits the highest notes. She actually can sound like a bird.

That's a tough one! I think maybe it's Minnie Ripperton, but Mariah comes very close to her range!

No, first and foremost because of the fact she would not write her very own fabric. i do no longer think of she's making a song from her heart the way she used to in cleasics like " resourceful and prescient of love".perhaps she is in opposition with youthful era R&B up and comers like Jennifer Hudson or Beyonce yet i've got faith she nonetheless has it in her.
