Yes,
when I was in college my roommate and I picked out the cutest little teddy bear hamster. While she and I were out, our other roommate decided to bring a friend over. Anyway when I got back from work and went to check on our hamster the poor little thing was dead. What was weird was he had been fine, playful and active hours before when I checked on him before leaving for work.
Neither one of us ever found out just WHAT happened to our little friend. We asked our other roommate if he or his girlfriend had hurt it on accident but he never admitted to anything. Sadly I still believe they had something to do with the little guy. He was my first first hamster ever and I had always thought Teddy Bear's were just the cutest ever.
The circumstances behind the deaths of the mom and 2 of the 4 babies sounds weird. You say their cage was outside and you left to go somewhere. However you don't say how long you were gone, how hot it was, if they had enough fresh cool water and food; if the cage was up high enough that cat's or dog's couldn't get near it to scare the hamster to death ( literally they have rather weak hearts and can actually be scared to death if shocked suddenly). It might help if you gave us some more information on the weather, length etc. for us to give you a better answer to the possible causes of why.
I'm sorry you lost mommy and 2 of the babies. Never fun loosing a pet.

I had that happen too. 1 hamster was still walking around and 2 dead. One was dead on its back and the other in a sitting/standing like position. Very strange. I think it may have something to do with stress... I attached a link that may help.

okay, why did you leave them outside?
the shock of weather changes(inside to out) could easily do it, not to mention the shock if a reptile came near them(when i was 5 we had a lizard, a few years latter with a cleaned cage we put hamsters in it, they vomited, alot, even though it had been cleaned they could still smell the lizard)
their heart rates are already a lot faster than ours, so i really wouldnt be surprised if they didnt go into shock some how.

I had a degu, which is kinda like a big hamster, suddenly die while we were on vacation. Don't know whether she got into something poison in the room or what. Put a damper on the rest of our vacation. A real bummer.
