It depends what you are wanting to do. Since you have a family of five, you are a little limited as to where you can stay for value purposes, on site. But, there still are options for you.
If you are wanting to stay offsite, it just depends on what your budget is and where you want to be located.
My suggestion, stay onsite, with five people, it will make getting around a lot easier. But, the main reason I suggest staying onsite is the dining plan. Especially if you have children, there is no better way to save money at Disney, but it is only offered if you stay at one of their hotels.
I would recommend contacting a travel agent that specializes in Disney. I think you would be a amazed at what they could all put together for you and how well they can work with any budget. An agent that specializes in Disney is going to be priceless for you. The main thing with an agent is that they can get you a wonderful vacation even with a smaller budget and make sure you don't sacrafice the quality and enjoyment of your vacation to save a few dollars.
I hope this helps!

I would recommend going through Disney or a travel agent. I would also recommend staying on site because the benefits are so much better (free transportation throughout the property, being able to be at the park an hour early or up to three hours later than guest who aren't staying at Disney, and so much more). There's also non Disney hotels on Disney property which might help depending on your budget too. But if you don't want to stay at Disney then you want to check out Kissimmee.

Go see a timeshare presentation. I know you shudder but they will GIVE you Disney tickets and it will only take two hours out of your vacation.
Make sure if they say it is 120 minutes they DO NOT go beyond that.
My wife and I live in Orlando and have gone to Disney (all the parks) seen shows, and gotten free stuff just for going to all the different timeshare presentations they have here.
WestGate Resorts is a good place to start. (THEY even give free lodging if I am correct)

You can save on accommodations and have a beautiful resort just 2 miles from Disney. A new 3BR condo is about the same price as a motel room. It would be worth your while just checking this out at

you can book directly through the Disney website and sometimes get great deals. (I think if you book now for the September timeframe you can get the Dining Plan for free. This is a major savings!)
I know that if you check www.PassPorter.com there are links to several travel agencies that get good deals with Disney.
Good Luck

Try this site: http://www.ytbnet.com/?userid=pgttravel.
I've found that they have been priced vacations than any other site. I booked my trip to Las Vegas through it and we got a better deal than through any other site.
