I have heard phrases like a "5-alarm fire," and even a "4-alarm hangover." What does this mean? Why alarms? Thanks.

It refers to how many fire districts have to go to the fire or cover another area because the other company has all their personnel at a huge fire. Not firehouses necessarily because there could be 10 firehouses for the same fire district. For example, in Portland we had a huge building burn down right in the middle of town and it was a 5 alarm fire because 5 different cities were involved either coming to aid in the fire or covering areas in case another fire occurred.
