Contrary to some of the answers above here is the straight dope. The term Grand Old Party came into usage around the time of Reconstruction to refer to the Republican Party. It was NEVER the original name for the Republican party--merely a nickname.

The GOP had no intention or expectation of banning gay marriage.
Their efforts were for media hype to get their base all excited.
But, no one expected it to go anywhere, and it didn't.
Just more wasted tax dollars by the Grand Old Party of borrow and spend, loot the Treasury politicians.

The Grand Old Party... I do not kid. That was the orginal name of the Republican Party.
