I was wondering why and when they stopped calling it an out when the catcher in a professional baseball game caught a foul tip.

A foul tip is;

1. ALWAYS caught by the catcher, and
2. ALWAYS is a live ball, runners may advance, and
3, NEVER is an out.

A batter can be called out after a foul tip if it is the third strike, but he is not out due to a foul tip, rather he is out on strike three.

Don't confuse a foul tip with a foul ball, they are two different things. A foul tip by definition is;
A batted ball which goes sharply and directly from the bat to the catchers hands, or glove and is legally caught by the catcher.

Some ruleset add "not higher than the batter's head" to that, but that is being dropprd in most. If a catcher has to move to the ball (even just his hands) to catch it, it would be a fly ball caught in foul territory and an out. If not caught it would be a foul ball (see # 1 above).

"a million. Foul tip no longer stuck through the catcher" If the ball wasn't stuck, that isn't any longer a nasty tip, no remember what the clowns in the printed revenues area say. a nasty TIP is a batted ball that is going sharp and direct from the bat to the catcher's palms and is legally stuck. it isn't a nasty tip except stuck and any foul tip that's stuck is a strike, and the ball is in play. it isn't a catch no matter if that's a rebound, except the ball has first touched the catcher's glove or hand. In order for the umpire to call it an out, the foul tip must be caught by the catcher on the third strike.

I hope this helps.

Umpires still do call outs when catchers catch foul tips. Not saying they are perfect, but they do their best. Of course, there are missed calls here and there.
