This is not the answer you wanted, but personally, I would place the rocks out in the path that I wanted and let them settle into the ground. The look is much more natural. Round-Up will get rid of the weeds. A smattering of brightly colored wildflowers here and there adds to the natural look. I "planted" a pathway of large rocks from my front yard into the back where my swing was in this manner. I loved it, and I got lots of compliments on it.

Prep work as with most projects is the key. Start out by making the area for the path to go with spray paint or if staight a chalk line. Use a shovel to outline those markings then remove at least 2 feet of the soil, more if your are in an area that has heavy frost in winter. Spray Round-up on soil, then place plastic weed block, then fill with crushed limestone, it allows for slight frost heave. Lastly place your path stones. When finished pour more crushed limestone and work in with a push broom, you can spray area with hose as you work-in the limestone.

Mark out the width of the path and the length of the path with orange paint or a string line. Then remove about 6 to 8 inches of topsoil from the marked area. Then put about 4 to 6 inches of modified stone (crusher run) from a quarry. You should compact this with a hand compactor that you can rent from a rental center. Then use stone dust or a screening type material for that last layer. You must put down this layer of screenings and work in the stones to achieve a level surface. You can get very creative with the layout of the stones and the spacing of the joints. If you decide to put the stones down with concrete, then absolutely make sure that you have a minimum 4 inch base of #2B gravel.
Then use the concrete on top of this gravel. Then use the concrete to place the stones to achieve a level surface.
Good luck!

Dig out an area a bit wider then the path you wish to lay. Try to keep it as level as you can. Buy a heavy duty plastic to lay down first. On top of the plastic fill in with a layer of sand on top of the plastic, then fill in the rest with your rock. pour more sand over the rock to fill in the gaps You may have to do this several times until the rock is settled in place. I would suggest using 2 x 4s as side barriers to hold the stone in place as a border which should be put in place prior to laying the sand and rock and to keep the walkway level.
