I received a letter from "Nationwide Asset Recovery Services" stating that they specialize in locating missing heirs and money. They stated that their research has disclosed unclaimed funds are being held in trust for an heir to the estate of my uncle, and they if they were to uncover the funds, I could collect 2/3 and they would keep 1/3. I have the feeling that if I knew how, I could access 100% of the money? Yet, I have no idea where these funds may be.

This is a scam. Do not reply. If you really think that there are unclaimed funds available to you, contact the controller's office for the state that you live in. For example, if you live in New York State, the website is:

First you will need to be able to prove that you are the nephew or niece of the person. This will take the form of Family records and you own Id and birth certificate. You will have to get in touch with the probate court in the county that you uncle lived in and they will be able to tell you if there was a will and how the trust was set up. You will need to the state and county records to know where the trust is being held and it would be to your advantage to consult a lawyer that handles trust to get the exact process.

Search online in the state where your uncle lived. Look at the state's unclaimed property or escheated assets.

Sometimes local tv stations have a link on their website.
