When your computer grinds to a near halt and sloooowing down...it's time to reinstall the OS for a fresh and fast Windows again!
No point trying this or that... I myself used to reinstall the OS several time a year. Now I simply backup the system and restore when it starts to slooooowww down.
Try this first though - see if you can restore your Windows to a previous restore point. Go Help & Support Center. Type Restore Wizard. Select Restore my computer to an earlier time to a previous Any BOLD dates on the Calender is a restorable backup. This is a saved copy of your Registry & Documents Settings.
Your Registry control the way your computer behave!
That is why it is important to do backup. Save future hands wringing episodes! I reccommend using Simply Safe Backup which is FREEWARE.
I also reccommend installing two OS in different partitions. This way you can boot to the any partitions to restore settings to either OS from Simply Safe Backup files for each OS.

http://housecall.trendmicro.com has a free scan.
Get Spybot - Search and Destroy. Scan for Spyware, then go to the tools menu and check the start up items. Disable ones you don't need.
Now, do you download a lot of fonts? At start up, then computer has to load all of your fonts, which can slow your computer considerably. Uninstall fonts you've downloaded and don't need. Just be careful not to uninstall a commonly used font or a system font.

In order: download firewall software (I recommend ZoneAlarm, there's a free version). Given that you're a novice, also get an antivirus (I recommend Kaspersky). Back up any data that you need (to CDs/DVDs/flash/whatever you want). Reinstall Windows. During installation process, chose to format your hard drive. When done, but before connecting your computer to the Internet, install and configure the firewall, then the antivirus.

You can go to http://www.bitdefender.com and run a free scan, but you probably have too much running in the backround.
Hit Start --- RUN---then type msconfig.
you will see a startup tab on the right.
uncheck the items like msmessenger and anything that doesn't look familiar. if you accidently uncheck something, don't panic because you can go back and put a checkmark back if your printer, scanner, or antivirus doesn't work.

Macafee has free scans. you can also download the free version of AVG Antivirus.
Some spyware will be deleted by the scanners, but will re-install themselves upon re-boot. Try Spybot and Ad-aware.
If all else fails, reformat and re-install windows.

It may be spyware that you missed.
You should have Windows Defender. It is free from Microsoft and watches your system prevents programs from taking over your home page etc.
Go here to read about and get it - http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security...
Two other free programs you should get & run about once a week are Spybot and Adaware. They also are free and you can get them both here - http://www.download.com/

Mcafee's website offers a free scan... it sounds more like you still have spyware though.

check to make sure you have nothing running in your start up that is a memory hog. also, i think you could go to "norton anti-virus" and I think there's a self help section that might even check and scan your computer.
