A Maverick is someone who rides the line or lives on the edge.

The Lakers originated in Minnesota so it has to do with being with so many lakes. LA didn't change their name.

A Clipper is a large sailing vessel since LA is by the sea this makes sense.

A spur is a metal thing on the back of a cowboy's boot to make the horse go.

Maverick - A western renegade. Kind of like a rebellious cowboy.

Laker - The team came from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Minnesota is called "the land of 1000 lakes."

Clipper - A type of sailing ship. LA's on the water and sailing is popular.

Spur - A spike-type thing that goes on a cowboy's boots. They are used to jab into horses to make them run faster.

actually maverick is a a word first used to name any cattle owned by Samuel Maverick, a famous cattle rancher in Texas back in the 19th century. He and his cows had a reputation for being tough--hence a "maverick" is a person who's strong-minded.
