I have several friends who are pediatric Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists, and Physical Therapists. They work with special needs children, or children with even mild developmental delays. I know that where I live they make around $50,000 a year. They love their jobs.

I work at Score! which is a tutoring company for children ages k-8. They're run by Kaplan. While my particular job (Academic Coach) is part time and doesn't pay enough to be a career, there are dozens of other opportunities within the company. The Score I work at in Long Beach is for a more computer based tutoring but the one down the road is more personal, pen and paper, one on one tutoring at Score! PAT. There are positions such as Director, and Tutor that are career positions. I believe to be a director or to work at PAT you need your bachelors degree. The directors actually get paid more than teachers and they get to work with kids of all ages. I love the job. It's still work, but it's like no other job I've ever had. I adore it.

There are other places like Score! such as Sylvan learning centers and the like, but I think Score! is the most fun for the kids and the adults who go there.

There's also the choice of starting your own day care center in your home or getting a position at one in your community. These are both full-time jobs but very rewarding I would think. Also if you just want to work with kids on a part time basis personal academic tutoring is a great start. There are also summer camps, and other programs to look into if you'd like to work with children.

Try working for The Boys and Girls Clubs in your area. These clubs actually pay really well, offer benfits, and if you go online under www.bgca.org they have an area where job openings are posted. The children that attend the Boys and Girls Clubs are not neccessarily poor, abused, or not cared for, there is a diversity among the members, staff, and management. Most parents just want a great place for their children to attend, whether it is for a Summer Program, or After school. Plus once a child reaches the age of 13, he/she may apply to be a volunteer within their Boys & Girls Club, have an actual interview, possibly be hired, and earn not only volunteer hours which look great on college applications, but they learn the reality of a job, and if they do well as a volunteer, then by the time they are 16 or older, they may earn the opportunity to be hired on as paid staff. I have worked for the organization for a year, my collegues, have anywhere from 5-23 yrs working for the Boys and Girls Clubs, and apparently it is very rewarding not only income wise, but you may opt to travel to work in different clubs, and you get to work with children at a completely different level imaginable. These children look at us as their home away from home, plus my own children have attended for over three yrs, and being a single, divorced, mom, I have loved it since day one. My autistic son is a volunteer, which is helping to teach him social skills, my younger wants to be a volunteer when he's thirteen, and me, I work in the office, but I can also go back to school, earn my degree, and still work for them.

It's a lot better than day care or teaching, in more ways than one!!! Good Luck!!!

Open your own loving, family daycare. If the kids like you because you are kind and gentle hearted with them, and take them on field trips everyday, (make sure you buy one of those maxi-vans with tons of seats)their parents will become lifelong friends with you too. I have seen it happen. You cannot have any type of felony criminal record or CPS involvement, but you can make a decent living doing that. It is very time consuming and you need to interview prospective parents just like any employer would check you out, because you don't want a bunch of heartache because you do get attached to the little ones in your care. Good luck and I hope you find the right answer.
