That will be debated for ever! I use Norton System Suite and am satisfied with it. There are others that will perform satisfactorily for you.

Use Ewido. It has a 15-day free trial. It is made for finding trojans and will find a lot of things that the other programs miss. Try it on an infected machine and you will see...
I recommend using AVG as well as Ewido, Spybot, AdAware. See the links below.

We had Norton & still got a virus. We have since switched to AVG(not the free one) it costs $40 for 2 years that our computer tech set us up with & haven't had a problem since.

Norton and Mcafee. Both are actually the same. But if you have lots of RAM buy Norton as it is a great system-hog. Better still.... Buy McAfee Internet Security Suite

I've heard good things about AVG. Norton sucks, they aren't even an anti-virus company anymore. I use Panda myself and it is pretty good.
