Yes Bessie is a real name....i knew a manager that was named Bessie..Very nice woman!!!NO offense taken!

Heard of Betsy or Bossy but never Bessy. Maybe it is just the way a child was heard to say the name correctly.

None taken! My mother had a cousin named Bessie. I think it's just an old fashioned name and you don't hear it anymore.

My husband's great-grandmother was named Bessy but we don't have a cow named that. We did have one named Double Ugly, but she died. (She's still ugly!)

The name "Bessy" is a diminuative form of the name "Elizabeth"; my children had a classmate with this moniker. Why it is commonly used for bovines is anybody's guess.

That is a old name and yes I use to know a lady that had the name but she has been dead for over twenty years.
