I have 2 passions, History and Geography and I have found that one enhances the other.

I've been lucky to visit ancient sites where some kind of incident happened and was recorded in a book or a poem or an official correspondence. What I have found, when I first read about the incident, is that I have an idea of how it happened... but when I actually visited the site, I could suddenly understand why things happened the way they did.

It's a real eye opener, especially when the geography of the area is a major part of the incident.

Besides this, a knowledge of geography comes in handy for everyday things... how many people do you know who don't know which ocean borders the U.S. on the East and West Coasts? Or, which river is longer... the Mississippi or the Amazon.? etc.

Get a good grounding in History and Geography and you will never be sorry you spent the effort.

I've been interested in geography since I was probably five. I guess it just caught my attention, and I got stuck. I also have a very big interest in history, as they complement each other. Geography is so much more than knowing countries and capitals, it's about everything that makes this earth useable, enjoyable, and meaningful. Geography really is an interest in Earth.

I am in college working towards a B.S. in Geography. I first majored in Education because it is considered a safe career. But Geography has always been a passion of mine and I recently switched my major to it. I feel it is risky but I would regret not studying it. The only thing not good about geography is that when you tell people your major they always ask you what can you do with that. It is extremely annoying but I tell them "it isn't 'what can you do with geography' it is 'what can't you do with geography'."

Maps have always fascinated me. My son and I have an Atlas and we like to look at all the places here in the U.S. and around the world. I like books that have maps in them too. Geography is a subject that helps you learn about the world you live in. So, keep your interest in geography, it will serve you all your life.
