Soft scrub, then car wax. It will keep the bat tacky and you have better contact. I've been doing this to my Demarini's for about 6-7 years.

it really depends what your cleaning off. soapy water will get rid of dirt. alcohol will remove pine tar. olive oil will remove old tape residue. olive oil might even remove pine tar, but never tried it on pine tar. but basically you want a non-abraisive to preserve the finish.
BTW: waxing your bat is illegal if you get caught.

You can try lemon juice. Or you can try immersing it in boiling water after adding lemon juice to it. I know it maybe difficult but just improvise.
