as per first answer; its not that these things are solved because of space travel, it is that space travel requires them to be solved better than we have now in order for space travel to be viable, what kinds of sociology problems do we have to solve?
Don't confuse the question.

It would seem to me that an artifical environment such as space travel can be easier to gain all the advantages you suggest. This environment implies that all participants agree to trust and depend on each other because any one of them could 'shuttle' the mission. The problem with the 'real' world is that REALITY can never satisfy the dreams and expectations of all human beings.
A perfect case is overpopulation which requires all cultures to have enough children to continue the culture but not too many that it 'crowds' the population. Try explaining this concept to a poor farmer in a third world country (no value implied). The farmer will have as many children as he can to sustain him in retirement.....
We make progress slowly and every time we come up with a solution, we raise another question.
The fact that we have time to raise a qustion like this means that we have time to think about other than to purely subsistence. This is progress for mankind....

None

Advancement of technology, which is what the space program ligitimately does, has never resulted in advancement of social or economic condition. Even advancements in farm production, such as the work done by GW Carver, has only led to local and temporary impact on social walfare. Don't expect social progress to be in line with technical progress.

The specific conditions you listed as a symptom of social problems will never be solved because they are relative. Your definition of poverty, greed, excess capitalism, competition, civilization, etc., is different than the next persons. Many of these are good for a society in moderation. Judging what is the approriate amount will always be subjective. So no two people will never be able to declare them as corrected.

1) Problems on Earth? Of course. 2) Issues in space that need us? Issues don't need people. But there is much of value in space waiting to be exploited. 3) Is the US using too much money on space exploration instead of more important things? No. Every dollar spent on space has generated multiple dollars in products and technology. 4) Am I interested in astronomy? Somewhat. 5) Would Iwant to be an astronomer? Doubtful. 6)With so many problems here on Earth should the USA continue an agressive exploration of space? I think space exploration can provide many answers to today's problems. Yes, we should. But the biggest thing we need to do is to develop asteroid mining technology. This could be a great boon for many of the world's poor if handled properly.

I'm not sure how any of these can be solved through space exploration - other than the creation of a new society on another planet. But obviously you are going to "plant" this new society with members of our current one, so I'm not sure if it would ever be more "partnership" oriented or not because that is not the characteristics of the soc. of origin

when we perfect space travel we can leave this place and all of it's problems behind, let the earthlings deal with their own mess!
It is not possible to design a perfect world because there is no such thing as a perfect design, chaos might be the only way
