In Stephen King's Shawshenk Redemption, the prison was supposedly set in Maine... was it a real prison, and if so, where? Or was it a studio set?

Shawshank Redemption was filmed in Mansfield, Ohio. The prison was orginally built and used as a boy's reform school and then later was used as a prison. It isn't used as a prison now but you can tour the facility. It is in the Guiness Book of Records for the highest cell block, 6 tiers high. Doesn't sound like much but it's amazing to see. I toured the prison last year and they have autographed pictures of the actors that were in Shawshank Redemption. You can read more facts and information at www.mrps.org

If you go to IMDB.com, and search the movie...look on the left and you'll see locations...that should tell you where the movie was filmed.
