Yes! Outstanding! I think I was ten or twelve when I first read it, and have read it again several times since. It was my first feeling of understanding life in a large city, it connected with my own poverty as a child (I loved the coffee can in the closet), and opened my eyes to a world entirely different from my own. I had to immediately read everything else Smith wrote - and I love them all. Thank you for bringing this memory to mind again!

When I was given this book back in high school, I thought, "Man, another boring novel, where can I get the cliff notes?" But when I actually started reading it, I couldn't put it down. It made me laugh, it made me cry, not many books can do that to a person nowadays. It was the only interesting book I read in all four years of high school english classes, I'm glad that others enjoy it as well.

Yes! This is also one of my favorite books as well. My mom mentioned to me once that it was her favorite book. So I found it on a bookshelf at our house and thought I'd give it a chance. I was leary at first because it was old and the binding was coming part so I immediately thought i was going to be a boring, old book. But nevertheless my opinion quickly changed once I realized how amazing it was!

I also love this book. I'm 44 and just read it for the first time this year. I've encouraged my kids to read it (17 and 14).

I have a daughter whose well-known e book it truly is. my own affection for it springs from its superb feeling for operating-class existence in early twentieth century Brooklyn. also from an undying affection for Francie Nolan, which translates right into a existence-lengthy love of Peggy Ann Garner, who jointly with James Dunne starred in Elia Kazan's first movie. i'm satisfied to record that Robert Altman's lack of existence resulted in the first video launch of numerous of his video clips, inclusive of a wedding ceremony, starring Peggy Ann and 40 seven others. It replaced into her very last movie.

It is funny you brought up this specific book because my 9th grade civics teacher bought me this. Yes I loved it because it made you think and sort of relate your life now to back then. My mom on the other hand hated it because she said it hit way too close to her life :)
