Because like me...butterflies don't swim all that well.
So anywhere they can safely land and get water with out drowning is good.
Consider taking a shallow bowl and filling it with marbles, or pretty rocks, and then fill it with just enough water to level the rocks, but not to submerge them. You can attract butterflies to this water source and spruce up the deck or back yard at the same time!

They're after the moisture in the mud. I've seen them congregate around puddles after a rain.

They like water, don't think its the mud.
