Actually, Roundup is very safe. You can actually plant seeds among weeds and then spray the Roundup on the weeds. The weeds will die and the seeds will be fine. Roundup works by interrupting photosynthesis. The plants that are growing are essentially starved to death which is why the entire plant dies. Any seeds that aren't up yet are not affected. Farmers actually plants their fields, then spray Roundup. When they do this they kill all the weeds that are already present and give the desired plants a head start so, hopefully, they will have a canopy that will keep weeds from growing.

Weed killers usually only selectively kill weeds. Some weed control products kill all "green plants," like the product "Roundup," but they are safe and target only the roots of the plants. Thus, when all the weeds are dead and the weed killer has "disappeared" (after a day or so), the soil won't be affected. Therefore, you can still plant, because the soil will still remain the same.

The only reason the products claim to prevent weeds for four months (or so) is because the products destroy the weeds and their roots. Because you don't plant weeds voluntarily, it will take four months before the weed seeds plant themselves.

"It is not active in the soil. All ornamental flowers, trees and shrubs may be planted one day after application." http://www.roundup.com/

Find a weed killer at your local lawn and garden that is systemic ( meaning the chemical goes all the way to the roots which is what you want). It will say on the container how long before you can plant after using the weed killer.

I worry about using pesticides too, even if everyone tells me they are safe. They sell long rolls of black plastic at garden supply stores. Cover the area you want to kill with the black plastic and anchor the edges so it won't blow away. Give it a few days and check to see if they have died. Once they are all dead, you can till the area and put the black plastic down over it. Cover it with mulch. When you want to plant something, pull back the mulch and cut and "x" in the plastic. Plant the plant and replace the mulch. This will kill the weeds and help prevent anymore from showing up.

Please don't use weed killers. Take a dark plastic trash bag and put over the area you want to plant and weigh down with rocks. Wait a few weeks and weeds should be yellow and half dead. Then using pitchford or shovel, turn your soil over. Using metal yard rake, take out the weeds. They should let go easily since they are almost dead. Good luck.
