That depends on the genre you're writing in. If you're writing a how-to essay for a class, you want it to be informative and easy to read. If you're writing a short story for fun, you want it to be gripping and interesting. If you're writing an article for a trade journal, you want it to be informative and accurate.

Whatever your writing is for, you need good grammar, so review grammar rules and use that grammar checker and spell checker your word processor comes with. You should also use active words wherever possible. Be creative. Instead of "said" you can use exclaimed, responded, or any number of alternatives. A thesaurus is a good reference book to have (try http://thesaurus.reference.com ) Study your subject so you know what you're writing about.

P.S. If this is a question you were asked to write about for a class, what a cheater! Feel free to use my advice, but don't blame me if you fail. I'm not an English teacher.

Again, it depends on the genre and your audience.
It should include correct spelling and grammar. It should make a point and be conversational. Sources should be attributed and cited.
To me, the best writing is writing from emotion and is about what touches you the deepest.

Empathy for the reader is the main thing. Write down what you would need if you were the reader for this work you are now writing.

Your question exemplifies those qualities. I suspect that you are an effective writer already. So enjoy your talent!

True emotions, actual events. Something that moves you enough to make sure you'll never ever forget. Almost something someone can relate too.
