First, you must have your bachelor's degree (it can be in anything). Then, you need to take the CBEST (covers basic skills) to get into a credentialing program. Next you need to take your credential classes and take a subject matter exam (CSET). Once you pass, you will be allowed to do your 1 semester of student teaching. If you are successful, then you will be able to apply for your teaching credential.
Some places do have an "intern" program, where you can start teaching sooner, but you will still have to pass the tests first.
As for salary, a starting teacher will make anywhere between $30,000 - $45,000 depending on the district and how much education you have.
