Hi,

When converting points to HEI there are a few things you need to keep in mind.

You will need to replace the original resistor wire that fed the original coil with standard wire. The original coil didn't require a full 12 volts so GM put a special wire in to reduce voltage. Your new HEI setup needs 12 volts alll the time.

You will need to trace your original coil power feed wire back to the wiring harness connector that is just below the power brake booster on the firewall. Then remove the bulkhead connector from the firewall. You will need to remove the wire completely from the bulkhead connector. You can does this by taking a small screwdriver and pushing the brass spade terminal closed and push it out of the bulkhead connector. Then cut all of the old wire from the brass terminal,

Then take a medium gauge stranded wire, long enough to reach from the firewall to the distbutor, and solder it to the brass terminal. Then replace the brass terminal back into the same space you removed it from and then replace the bulkhead connector.

You can then attach the HEI power terminal wire to the new wire and the plug it in the BATT terminal on your HEI. Once you supply the HEI with a full 12 Volts the HEI will take care of the rest. As long as the HEI has power and your plug wires are routed correctly, it should run fine.

If you are using the HEI from the 1975Gm and up, the coil is built in under the distributor cap.
There is a company that uses solid state ignition (eliminates the points and condenser) gives you a hotter spark, faster starting, better economy but it utilizes the original cap/rotor/coil &wires. The company is Pertronix. You can find them almost anywhere for about $90-130. Very easy to install.
