I'm polish, and I've attended Polish school and I have a striking memory about learning Poland's history prior to WWI. Yet my history teacher says that Poland was created after WWI. I told myself that famous people (prior to WWI), such as Chopin, Copernicus, and numerous others were'nt from a group of people that spoke polish but a country too.
List Sources please...
Thanks

My parents even had a disscussion w/ the teacher. They then said that poland was established hundreds of years before America was discovered.
WHY IS HISTORY IN OUR SCHOOL OPINIONATED, AND SWAYED INTO WHAT THE TEACHERS VIEW IT TO BE?

Poland is an ancient country formed around middle of the 10th Century under the Piast Dynasty. Poland lost its independent several times prior to WWI. And prior to WWI, Poland was partitioned by its neighbors, Russia, Austria, and Russia.
It regained independence in 1918 in the aftermath of the WWI as the Second Polish Republic.
Your teacher could be right in that the Second Polish Republic was formed after WWI.

I've observed that many teachers focus on the Western version of history and leave out all the rest--call it what you will. I have lived in Europe for a couple years and learned a lot about the countries there.
Poland was a region of mixed peoples, like the Slavs, Balts, and Germans. The Duchy of Poland merged with Lithuania to form the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, which spread over parts of Belarus and Ukraine. The Kingdom of Poland was a major player in the Christian world for centuries, the Teutonic Order, the Livonian Order, and some of the Templars used Poland for their activities. Poland was finally swallowed up by Russia, Austria, and Prussia (then under German control) by the end of the 18th century. They were always still there, although no one recognized their independence until after WWI.

Yes, Poland was a country before World War. It REGAINED it's indepencence after the wars. Poland has been through alot from beging taken land from and it can be confusing. But your history teacher is really wrong...really wrong. I think because he's not polish and he wouldn't really know all the details to the whole history part. He goes by the textbook. But we Polish people know our history. =)

A nation with a proud cultural heritage, Poland can trace its roots back over 1,000 years. Positioned at the centre of Europe, it has known turbulent and violent times.
There have been periods of independence as well as periods of domination by other countries. Several million people, half of them Jews, died in World War II.
