The reasons it may be sticking are old paint around the rim or a partial vacuum due to the air in the can combining with the paint. You can buy a paint can opener which is similar to a flat screw driver except that the blade is slightly curved. This tool is preferable to a regular screwdriver to minimize damage to the can. Gently continue to ply open slowly rounding the can as you do.

Get a flathead screw driver and wedge it into the side. then hit it with a hammer until the lid pops off. Have fun painting! : D

put a screwdriver under the lip of the lid and push on it until it opens.
they also sell special paint can openners in hardware stores

I would suggest using a sharp cutter of some sort, and go around the lid of the container. You probably want to wear protective gloves as well.

I'd use a flat head screw driver, use a little force and it come loose, then move along the lip of the can until it pries off.
