Look carefully and try to find what closes matches your tone. I know some things that are too dark can make people look orange (foundations, fake tanners, etc...), and too light would obviously not be good. If it's hard to pick, try going to a department store's make-up counter and see what they can suggest and possibly try on you to find a good match.

for cover ups of blemishes there is something called a green pen it would be used on blemishes prior to the use of your base and foundation to balance off the color of the blemish. ask a local cosmetologist or any licensed hair dresser they should be able to get something for you.
